Fairy Chimneys, Cave Suites and Balloon Rides, OH MY!

Hey ohhhhhhh!!!!!

We are now on the Mediterranean Coast enjoying the sun but want to tell you all about our trip to interior Turkey.

After Cosandere and the Sumela Monastery we made our way to Sivas for one night to break up the drive to Goreme in Cappodocia. Sivas was a very busy and bustling town with no Western tourists in sight. The town has a very interesting history including being the sight of a riot several decades ago by Islamic fundamentalists which resulted in a hotel being burnt to the ground and dozens of people dying. One of the reasons for the riot involved the novel the Satanic Versus. Dad, google this. You will find it interesting. Also of note, Sivas was the place where Lance-o tried ketchup on pizza! At first, we thought we were given ketchup (and mayo) as we were Westerners and white people clearly love ketchup. However, we saw several locals dousing their pizza's with ketchup so we had to try it. Lance thought it added to the flavour (as tomato sauce is lacking on Turkish interpretations of Western pizza). I thought it tasted like ass. So there's that.

After Sivas we drove to Goreme in Cappadocia.   We stayed there for 5 nights in a cave suite. Literally, our hotel room was in a cave that had been carved out of the soft rock formations in the village. Surrounding and throughout the village were "Fairy Chimney's" or rock formations formed over the years as a result of volcanic eruptions and natural erosion processes. These Fairy Chimneys are also very phallic looking and most pleasing to the eyes. The name of our cave suite was indeed named Love Valley for the nearby valley of the same name. We actually hiked the valley and all of the Fairy Chimney formations made me think about.....love....and stuff....

Our time in Goreme was amazing. We experienced a traditional Turkish bath, hiked the Love Valley, took a guided tour which included visiting an underground city (Derinkuyu) built by (they think) the Hittites hundreds and hundreds of years ago and housed up to 4000 people during time of attack and also rode in a hot air balloon. Truly an awesome time. Pictures will follow but I need to run as dinner is being served in 10 minutes at our Watermill retreat.

Love you all and Mom and Dad thank you so much for letting us borrow the camera. The pictures are amazing.

Lamy :)
